About
Alex D-M
Suffolk born sound engineer & technical producer, Alex is currently based in Manchester (UK) working as a Project Manager following his studies at Salford University for an MSc in Audio Production. His work as a freelance audio engineer is ongoing, most recently working with the Bridgewater Hall technical team for concerts, including The Hallé and BBC Philharmonic orchestras.
Alex is very keen and ambitious at applying his qualities in creativity, technology & musicality to researching and specialising in spatial audio, with a portfolio of projects encompassing immersive idioms and formats. His enthusiasm and determination has yielded successes recently as a project manager, guiding a department through a large NHS transformation programme.
Following the end of his MSc in autumn 2020, Alex was successfully appointed in a Project Management role within the NHS, overseeing the build and implementation of a new electronic patient record system (more project info here). He extended his management skills through an Open University Project Management course.
During his master's, Alex's projects have included researching and developing a new loudspeaker array configuration and scene-based audio mastering techniques and processes. Alongside his research, Alex has been progressing his post-production techniques and proficiency, working on dialogue editing and dubbing mixing, especially in applying object-based audio knowledge to mixing in Dolby Atmos and MPEG-H 3D Audio.
In 2019 Alex gained a First Class BA (Hons), in Creative Music Technology from the University of Hull. Throughout his final year he worked as the house sound technician at Middleton Hall, working on professional and amateur performances, including BBC Contains Strong Language, Candoco Dance Company, Hull Chamber Music & the British Science Festival.
Alex was very privileged to work alongside industry professionals and learn from them throughout his education, working as the mixing engineer for one broadcast of BBC Introducing Humberside in 2019 being a highlight. He was honoured to attend the Gus Dudgeon Foundation/JAMES Summer Course for the top nine graduating music technology students in the UK of 2019.
Whilst at Hull University he performed as a violinist with Ensemble Fractus, the contemporary music group with whom he went on tour to China in 2017, the University Camerata, leading the 2017-18 season. In the 2016-2018 seasons, he also performed with the Hull Philharmonic Orchestra.
Alex received the Duke of York Young Entrepreneur Award in 2018 with business partner George Sztuka for their business, Middleton Records. In addition to gaining business skills, this venture gave inspiration and experience in achieving high quality audio whilst encouraging Alex to develop his skills within the audio world.
Alex has a broad range of skills encompassing both audio and music industries, his most recent research involves spacial audio for use in production and broadcasts. The content of his portfolio shows the breadth of work he undertakes covering a range of idioms and styles.
